Are you Sabotaging yourself from Achieving your Dreams?
You're probably wondering why I've recently start posting so much about issues with mindset...Well, the reason is that I've recently made quite a big discovery. If you'd asked me about two to three weeks ago about whether I thought I was in a good state of mind, I would have looked at you knowingly and replied "of course, it's important to have the right mindset in this business"...
The unfortunate irony of it all is that I wasn't in the right mindset for anything a couple of weeks ago - In fact, I'd say that the last couple of weeks have been my worst ever in terms of productivity and mental state.
Don't get me wrong, I'm making progress, but I wasn't "busting my ass" to make things happen...
Here is a Common Misconception that Damages many Newcomers...
Many beginners believe that they are in the right mindset. They believe that because they're resilient and never give up, even in the face of adversity, that their mind is programmed for success.
Unfortunately, this just isn't so. The reality is that you need much more than just a "never say die" attitude.
Why? Because this attitude will not keep you working efficiently - it's the wrong way of looking at your challenges. It's like saying "I must never quit" as opposed to "I can already picture that new car on my drive, now what's the quickest way of getting this done?"
And the difference between those two frames of mind are actually minimal but has huge consequences.
What are you Focusing on right now?
There is a tendency among people who are "unsure" about whether making money online is possible or just a scam to focus on the negatives and blow them out of all proportion. Whereas a positive is taken for granted and shortly forgotten.
One of the techniques that I've been using to focus my working habits is to switch that habit around. When I get 50 subscribers in a day, I really congratulate myself, focus on what an achievement it is and channel that energy into my work for the rest of the day.
I was taking comfort in Sabotaging myself...
My problem was this...When I make progress and start to look into the future I am full of negativity and doubt. I was consumed with an overwhelming sense of doubt. "I can't do that!".
All the top mindset coaches disagree on certain elements, they have their own theories and draw their own conclusions from having interviewed thousands of successful people. However, one thing they do universally agree on is that if you're picturing failure in your mind before you set out to achieve something, then the outcome is an absolute certainty.
I didn't know this at the time but I was actually sabotaging myself and it was really affecting me. Thankfully, I've had some time to assess everything, learn some tricks that top performers use to overcome this self sabotage trait and flip everything around.
I'm now filled with an overwhelming sense of certainty that I'm going to achieve my goals in this business and damn has this mindset helped me get through my to do list...
Here's How to Flip the Self Sabotage Coin Around in Your Favour
Firstly, I want to make absolutely clear that I don't take credit for any of what I'm about to teach you - this is a succinct summary that's a result of studying the likes of Tony Robbins, Napoleon Hill and Brian Tracy this week...
1 - Identify Tendency
The first step to overcoming self sabotage is to identify times when you tend to fall into this self sabotage trap. For me it was when I was planning my workload for the next couple of months - I'd write down my goals and objectives and then all of a sudden I'd be consumed with a sense of "this won't work - what's the point".
This is pretty much the only time when I ever self sabotage myself.
2 - Feel Good About it
Yeah, I know, this sounds stupid but bare with me a second. The human brain is an incredible thing - it will instinctively make you avoid pain at all costs.
Now, for some reason, my brain associates "following through" with pain. This is most likely because I've failed at ventures in the past and therefore it wants to stop me going through the same thing again.
This is good, this means my brain is doing its job well.
The only problem with the brain is that its tactical but not strategic. It doesn't see the bigger picture, only the possible short term pain. And, of course, if you've never really been successful in any way then your brain has no reason to associate "following through" in a positive fashion.
Ackknowledge to yourself that actually your brain is doing its job well - feel happy about it - you can see why it thinks what it thinks. But now its time to reprogram it...
3 - Leverage for Reprogramming your Mindset
We are now going to associate not following through with pain. And we'll associate following through with elation. We do this by writing down two lists.
On the first list will be a load of things that you will miss out on if you don't follow through. You're trying to teach yourself that by not following through there is a LOT of pain to be had.
Then, of course, you do the opposite and associate pleasure, elation and success with the "following through". Now, the trick is to really try and focus on the end results and convince your brain how amazing it would be to achieve them.
4 - Interrupt the Pattern with the Erasure Technique
There is a technique called the erasure technique and it's used as soon as you start feeling yourself going into self sabotage mode. It's a method of interruption.
Here's what you do: As soon as you feel yourself going into a state of self sabotage then you must immediately make a joke out of it. You need to picture the scene in your mind, make it seem ridiculous, and try and make yourself laugh.
This is where I sound bloody stupid, but here it is anyway:
I am currently building a huge membership site with a friend of mine and whenever I used to think about getting the work done, I'd always fall into a state of self sabotage.
Now, whenever I feel myself falling into this state, I picture a cartoon character sat at his desk with a question mark over his head, looking at a completed membership site and trying to figure out why nobody has signed up...
I've no idea why, but it makes me laugh. That's the key!
5 - Rehearse Achieving the Goal Over and Over again
This last point is all about visualisation and pretending that you are where you want to be. You need to try and feel everything, the emotions, the smell, touch - everything.
For instance, if one of your goals is to have a new car sat on your drive, then you'd imagine walking out your house to the car, opening up the door, getting in, smelling the new car smell, turning on the ignition and revving up that beautiful V8 engine!
Try and get yourself excited about it. And make it real like it's already happened.
I'm not a Nutter....
I've just read some of this article over again and I sound like a nutjob - but the reality is that this works.
You're brain is the most powerful wealth creation weapon you have and it therefore stands to reason that we should at least understand how it works and try and optimise it for peak performance, much like you would a sports car.
Stop laughing at me and try everything I've just suggested!
